Graduate School of Dental Medicine

Graduate School of Dental MedicineSince its inception in 1977, a total of 537 alumni (422 men and 115 female; 316 Ko-type and 221 Otsu-type) have received doctorates of Medical Dentistry. Graduate studies are categorized as Ko-type, a 4-year course and Otsu-type, a specialized graduate course. Graduate students enrolled in the Otsu-type course are generally practitioners or employed dentists, involved in research, and are not limited to a specific number of terms for completion.

Graduate student enrollment regularly reaches 72, averaging 18 new registrants per academic year. First year graduate studies consist of lectures and practical training. The curriculum for each year thereafter depends upon the course type. The courses and research centers are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, and are networked to facilitate cooperation. Research themes at the graduate level range from general medical science, such as molecular biology and gene remedy, to specialized clinical dentistry. Students generally select themes relevant to their course of study. However, it is possible to pursue an independent theme.

Tsurumi University is increasingly providing opportunities for extramural grants and, in 2006, established its own scholarship program to encourage and promote postgraduate studies.
